THE DEFINITION
What is GEO?
GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is the practice of making your content the material a generative AI system uses when it writes an answer. Not a position in a list of links. Inside the answer itself.
When someone asks an assistant a question your business should win, the model composes one response and builds it from a handful of sources. GEO is the discipline of being one of them.

→ SEO — win a ranked position that earns a click.
→ GEO — be the material the model writes from.
→ AEO — be cited in the answer the user is shown.
GEO and AEO describe the same shift from different angles and are largely interchangeable in practice — one names the generative act, the other the visible outcome. Use whichever word your audience uses. The work is the same.
Anyone selling GEO as the death of SEO is overselling. Search traffic still exists in volume and still converts; generative answers are growing alongside it. The two are won and lost independently, and one extra click from either is still a customer.
Most businesses need both: SEO for the people still clicking through, GEO so that the answers being composed about your category are built from your material rather than a competitor's.
→ A direct answer stated early, not buried under preamble.
→ Real structure — lists, tables, definitions, ordered steps — that a model can lift cleanly.
→ Structured data identifying the entity, so the model knows who is speaking.
→ Provenance: an author, a date, a method. Unattributed prose loses to attributable prose.
→ Original material — your own data, definitions or frameworks — that exists nowhere else to cite.
→ A verified v=AEO1 record, so the facts you publish carry proof rather than assertion.
A rank tracker cannot see any of this, which is why most reporting misses it entirely. Two things are worth measuring, and they are not the same:
→ Presence — ask the engines a fixed set of real questions on a schedule; record whether you appear, and who appears instead.
→ Referrals — watch server logs for visits arriving from assistant domains.
Keep the question set identical between runs, or there is no trend to read. And note the distinction that catches people out: an AI crawler fetching your pages proves you are being read, not that you are being cited. Those are different numbers and should never be added together.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making your content the material a generative AI system uses when it writes an answer. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be inside the answer itself — quoted, paraphrased, or credited when the model composes its response.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
In practice they describe the same shift and are largely interchangeable. GEO (generative engine optimization) emphasises the generative act — being the source a model writes from. AEO (answer engine optimization) emphasises the outcome — being cited in the answer a user is shown. Pick whichever term your audience uses; the work behind both is the same.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Yes, in what it optimizes for. SEO optimizes for a ranked position that earns a click. GEO optimizes for inclusion in a composed answer that frequently produces no click at all. They share plumbing — crawlable HTML, structured data, clean information architecture — but they are scored differently and can be won and lost independently.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No, and treating it as a replacement is a mistake. Search traffic still exists in volume and still converts, while generative answers are growing. Most businesses need both: SEO to capture the people still clicking through, GEO so the answers being composed about your category are built from your material rather than someone else's.
What actually moves GEO?
Content a model can extract confidently: a direct answer stated early rather than buried, real structure (lists, tables, definitions, step sequences) instead of undifferentiated prose, structured data that identifies the entity, provenance in the form of an author and a date, and original material — data, definitions, or frameworks — that exists nowhere else. Models reach for sources that are unambiguous and attributable.
How do I measure GEO?
Not with a rank tracker, which is why most reporting misses it. You measure two separate things: presence, by asking the engines a fixed set of real questions on a schedule and recording whether you appear and who appears instead; and referrals, by watching your server logs for visits arriving from assistant domains. Keep the question set identical between runs or the trend is meaningless.
Can a small site win at GEO?
More easily than at SEO, which is the reason the term matters. A generative answer cites two or three sources rather than ten, and it selects on clarity, structure and provenance rather than accumulated domain authority. A small site with the clearest, best-sourced answer to a specific question can be chosen over a large one with a vague page.
