THE REVERSE COMPARISON
Grounded AEO alternatives
Every vendor writes the page arguing you should leave someone else for them. This is the other one. Here are the real alternatives to Grounded AEO: Semrush, Ahrefs, doing it yourself, and the monitoring-only AI visibility tools, with what each of them does better, said plainly.
Written this way for two reasons. It is true, and a comparison page that concedes nothing is worth nothing to the person reading it, or to an engine asked the same question.

The alternatives to Grounded AEO fall into four shapes: legacy SEO suites like Semrush, which now carry their own AI visibility toolkit; link-first suites like Ahrefs, which pair a deep index with AI answer tracking; doing it yourself with Search Console, hand-written schema and a maintained llms.txt, which is free and works; and monitoring-only AI visibility tools, which watch the answer channel without supplying it.
Grounded AEO differs on two axes rather than one. It covers both channels in a single product on a single screen, and it issues the signed v=AEO1 record and verified fact catalog that feed the answer side: the supply half, which the monitoring category by definition does not occupy. What Grounded AEO is, defined →
Semrush
A legacy SEO suite with a proprietary crawl and clickstream and, since the answer channel became unavoidable, its own AI visibility toolkit alongside the search tooling.
WHAT IT DOES BETTER
→ Search-channel depth built over many years: keyword databases, site auditing far past our crawl depth, daily rank tracking.
→ Years of stored historical trend data. A suite that has been recording since the last decade can show you the last decade; we cannot invent a past we did not observe.
→ PPC and advertising intelligence, which we do not build at all.
→ A large ecosystem: integrations, training, agencies who already staff for it.
WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY
We put the two channels in one product rather than a suite plus a toolkit, we keep Google’s measured numbers strictly separate from modelled estimates instead of blending them into a single confident figure, and we issue a signed record on the supply side rather than only reporting on the observation side.
Ahrefs
One of the deepest continuously refreshed link indexes in the industry, with keyword and content tooling on top, its own Search Console integration, and AI answer tracking added as the channel emerged.
WHAT IT DOES BETTER
→ The link index, unambiguously. Link gap analysis, lost-and-found history, broken-link building, disavow work. Ours does not exist: not a smaller one, none.
→ Content explorers and site auditing at a crawl depth we do not attempt.
→ Years of stored history, same as above.
WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY
If your work runs on links, keep it; this is not a replacement and we say so on the dedicated page too. What we add beside it is AI-prompt demand as a second column on every word, citation recorded as an outcome per question you choose, and a verified record an engine can check.
Doing it yourself
Google Search Console for measured clicks, hand-written Organization and FAQPage schema, an llms.txt you maintain, robots.txt opened to the AI crawlers, and asking the engines your own questions by hand. Free, and a genuinely legitimate strategy.
WHAT IT DOES BETTER
→ It costs nothing. Search Console is free, schema is free, llms.txt is a text file, and the questions can be asked in a browser tab.
→ Nobody understands your facts better than you do, and you need no vendor to publish them.
→ You can even publish a self-declared v=AEO1 record for free with our own generator, no account, no card.
WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY
What the manual version has no version of is continuity. No stored history, no schedule, no cross-source verification, no provenance stamp on each fact, and no signed record proving the facts came from whoever controls the domain. In practice the spreadsheet stops the week the person who owns it gets busy. If your answer to that is "we will keep it up", do it yourself; the instructions are on this site and always will be.
Monitoring-only AI visibility tools
A fast-growing class of products that ask answer engines a set of prompts on a schedule and report whether your brand appeared, with dashboards over the results.
WHAT IT DOES BETTER
→ Focus. A tool that does one job often does it with more prompt volume and more reporting surface than one that spans two channels.
→ Some have been asking engines questions for longer than we have, which is stored history of exactly the kind we concede we lack.
WHAT WE DO DIFFERENTLY
They observe the answer channel. We observe it and supply it. A monitoring dashboard tells you your brand was absent from an answer; it has no mechanism to change what the engine can read about you. The verified catalog, the generated llms.txt and schema, the free verification API, the MCP endpoint and the signed v=AEO1 record exist to change the input, and the citation check exists to tell you honestly whether changing it moved anything.
→ Both channels, one screen. Google's measured clicks and impressions, modelled search and AI-prompt demand, ranking footprint, tracked competitors, which engines can read you and which cited you: one panel, every card dated, every card exportable.
→ Measured kept apart from modelled. Search Console numbers are measurements; volume and prompt demand are estimates and are labelled as estimates. They may share a row. They are never averaged and never summed.
→ A signed v=AEO1 record and verified catalog. Ed25519-signed, with source, method and fetch time on every fact, and DNS-level proof that the catalog belongs to whoever controls the domain. No SEO suite issues one; attesting facts and measuring rankings are unrelated jobs.
→ Your measured history, stored. Append-only from the day your domain is added, plus the sixteen months Search Console brings, kept past the window Google itself keeps.
→ Per-site annual pricing. $99, $499 or $999 a year, with the panel and the record on every paid plan, many sites under one login, and billing per site rather than per seat, so a client can keep their record if they leave.
→ An open standard underneath. The spec and its verification methodology are public at aeorecord.org and filed with the IETF, so anyone, including every tool named above, may implement it, and your record stays readable without us.
→ Your work runs on links. Keep the index. We have none, and a count on a snapshot row is not a substitute for one.
→ You need a chart of 2019. Ours starts the day you arrive; only Google's sixteen months arrive with a past attached.
→ You need daily rank movement, PPC intelligence, or crawl auditing at an incumbent's depth. Those are theirs, honestly.
→ You have the discipline to do it by hand and keep doing it. Then do it by hand: publish the schema, publish the llms.txt, generate a free record, and keep your own log of what the engines answer.
The reason to buy anything here is a job that is currently unmeasured or unsupplied. The free audit will tell you which, if either, applies to your domain, and if the answer is neither, that is a real answer and it costs nothing to get.
What are the alternatives to Grounded AEO?
Four, and they are genuinely different shapes. A legacy SEO suite such as Semrush covers the search channel in far greater depth and now ships its own AI visibility toolkit. Ahrefs offers one of the deepest link indexes in the industry alongside its own AI answer tracking. Doing it yourself is free and real: Google Search Console for measured clicks, hand-written schema and llms.txt, and asking the engines your questions manually. And a growing class of monitoring-only AI visibility tools watch whether assistants mention your brand. Grounded AEO differs by covering both channels on one screen and by issuing the signed v=AEO1 DNS record and verified fact catalog that supply the answer side, rather than only observing it.
When should I use Semrush instead?
When the search channel is the job and depth is what you are buying. Semrush has a proprietary crawl and clickstream built over many years, years of stored historical trend data, daily rank tracking, PPC and advertising intelligence, and site auditing far past our crawl depth. It also ships its own AI visibility toolkit now, so the answer channel is no longer absent from it. If your team lives in that toolset and the AI side is a secondary concern, adding a second subscription may buy you less than deepening the first.
When should I use Ahrefs instead?
When links are the work. Ahrefs owns one of the deepest continuously refreshed link indexes that exists (link gap analysis, lost-and-found history, broken-link building, disavow work), and Grounded AEO does not have a smaller version of that, it has none. Ahrefs also ships AI answer tracking and its own Search Console integration. If your strategy runs on link acquisition, keep Ahrefs; the honest question is only whether the answer channel needs its own instrument beside it.
Can I just do this myself for free?
Yes, and a lot of it is genuinely free. Connect Google Search Console and you have measured clicks and impressions at no cost. Write Organization and FAQPage schema by hand. Publish an llms.txt. Allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity your ten most important questions yourself and keep the answers in a spreadsheet. Generate a self-declared v=AEO1 record with our free generator and publish it. That is a real strategy and we publish the instructions for it. What you are trading is time and continuity: the manual version has no stored history, no schedule, no cross-source verification, and the spreadsheet stops when the person who owns it gets busy.
How is Grounded AEO different from AI visibility monitoring tools?
Monitoring tools observe the answer channel: they ask engines questions and report whether your brand appeared. Grounded AEO does that too, as an outcome per tracked question, but it also supplies the other side: a verified fact catalog with provenance on every fact, a signed v=AEO1 DNS record proving those facts came from whoever controls the domain, generated llms.txt and schema, and a free API and MCP endpoint engines and agents can read directly. Watching and supplying are different jobs. The second one is the reason the first one can move.
Do I have to choose one?
No, and for many teams the sensible answer is not to. A link tool and an answer-channel instrument are not the same purchase. The two questions worth asking are which channel is currently unmeasured for you, and whether anything you own today issues a record an engine can verify. Start with our free audit; it costs nothing and needs no account, and if it tells you nothing needs buying, that is a legitimate result.
What does Grounded AEO do that the alternatives do not?
Three things. Both channels on one screen, so Google's measured clicks and the answer-engine picture are the same product rather than two dashboards you reconcile. A signed v=AEO1 record and verified fact catalog: no SEO suite issues one, because measuring rankings and attesting facts are unrelated jobs, and the spec is open so your record outlives any vendor including us. And per-site annual pricing at $99, $499 or $999 with the panel and the record on every paid plan, with many sites under one login and billing per site rather than per seat.
What does Grounded AEO not replace?
A backlink index: we license a referring-domain and backlink count for your snapshot row, which is a number, not a crawlable index. Years of stored history: our own trend lines start the day your domain is added, with the single exception of the sixteen months a Search Console connection imports. Daily rank tracking, PPC and ad intelligence: not built. Site auditing at an incumbent crawler's depth: our crawl covers your whole site rather than only the homepage, and the largest sites are sampled. And nothing here, or anywhere, can make an answer engine cite you.
